Meet Karl A. Hearne, the University of Houston's Staff Council president for the 2024-25 academic year. His journey began with Cougar First Impressions during his student years at UH, leading him to professional development and leadership roles within the university.
Hearne has been part of the Staff Council since 2013, holding various positions such as president-elect, historian, and co-chair for the community outreach committee. He is committed to fostering community and aiding UH staff and faculty in reaching their potential.
Hearne shared insights into his background: "I am a proud Houston Cougar through and through, having earned both my bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Houston." He also holds three degrees from a theological seminary in Houston. Currently, he serves as executive assistant to Elwyn Lee, vice president for neighborhood and strategic initiatives.
Reflecting on his tenure at UH, Hearne stated: "I have been working with the University of Houston since 2002, and this year marks my 22nd year of service."
His career choice was influenced by support from the community: "The love and support I’ve received from so many people in this community inspired me to pursue a career in academia," said Hearne. He mentioned Dr. Lee as a mentor during his time as a student assistant.
As Staff Council president, Hearne aims to advocate for staff: "I was motivated to take on this role so I could advocate for our staff and support staff and student success."
He described Staff Council's function: "Staff Council serves as a campuswide advisory group to the president and university administration," always seeking ways to enhance campus life.
To get involved with Staff Council, Hearne suggests attending meetings or joining committees. The council promotes engagement through activities like wearing “UH Staff Wear Red on Fridays” shirts.
Discussing his goals for his term, Hearne said: "I want to focus on doing more with less... I want to challenge my peers to focus on quality not quantity." He also seeks to raise awareness about Staff Council initiatives.
Hearne describes his leadership style as supportive: "I would never ask my peers to do something I wouldn’t do myself." He aims to restore a family aspect within the council.
Outside work, Hearne engages in mentoring and community service. Looking ahead post-term, he plans continued involvement with Staff Council: "I plan to continue working with Staff Council... making our community a better place on behalf of the University of Houston."
In three words, he describes UH as offering opportunity, growth, excellence.
