The University of Houston has received a $10 million donation from the Michael and Rebecca Cemo Family Foundation to support its Intercollegiate Athletics. This contribution will specifically aid in the construction and maintenance of the new Memorial Hermann Football Operations Center. In recognition, the west-end scoreboard at TDECU Stadium will bear the Cemo family’s name.
UH President Renu Khator expressed gratitude for this significant gift, stating, “We’re incredibly grateful for the Cemo Family Foundation’s legacy of support for the University.” She emphasized that this donation would enhance UH's football program and competitiveness in the Big 12 Conference. The gift holds particular significance following the recent passing of former Regent Michael Cemo.
Michael Cemo had a long history with UH, having earned his bachelor's degree in economics there in 1968. He served on various boards and was instrumental in developing facilities like Michael J. Cemo Hall at Bauer College. His contributions were recognized with an honorary doctorate from UH in 2008.
Stephanie Cemo commented on continuing her father's legacy: “It’s a great honor to be able to continue our support of the University of Houston after our father’s recent passing.” She noted how important UH was to him and his belief in education as a foundation for success.
Eddie Nuñez, UH Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics, remarked on the impact of this donation: “The Cemo family’s generosity demonstrates a deep commitment to the future of UH Athletics, particularly our football program.”
Plans for the $130 million football operations center were announced last year following UH's entry into the Big 12 Conference. The facility is expected to be completed within approximately ten months and will include athlete performance centers, academic support services, state-of-the-art locker rooms, and office space for coaches and staff.
Eloise Brice, UH Vice President for Advancement and Alumni, highlighted the importance of this gift: “We are deeply inspired by the Cemo family's remarkable generosity and enduring legacy at the University of Houston.”
