Reggie Bush, principal of Wisdom High School, is being recognized as this week's HISD Star Educator. His commitment to fostering a learning environment that supports students from diverse backgrounds has been highlighted as a key factor in his recognition.
Bush's career with the Houston Independent School District (HISD) began as a social studies teacher at Williams Middle School. He advanced through various roles, including assistant principal and after-school coordinator in the Acres Homes Coalition, and assistant principal at Burrus Elementary. He later became principal of Kashmere Gardens before taking on the role at Kashmere High School in 2018, where he played a significant role in improving the school's accountability ratings.
Bush has noted the positive impact of the New Education System (NES) at Wisdom High School, citing a 19% improvement in math performance and a 28% increase in science scores, along with gains in English Language Arts (ELA) and social studies.
When asked about his favorite subject during his own school years, Bush mentioned biology. Reflecting on his time with HISD, he recalled leading efforts to elevate Kashmere High School from an "improvement required" status to a C-rated campus with two distinctions.
Bush appreciates Houston for its diversity and proximity to other major cities like Dallas, New Orleans, Austin, and San Antonio. He also enjoys the city's dining options and leisure activities.
Looking ahead to the upcoming school year, Bush aims for all students to be placed correctly by grade level and excel academically while engaging actively in extracurricular activities. For staff members, he hopes to enhance their comfort with their professional skills and build leadership capacity within the Wisdom community.
