Yasmeen Khaliq, principal of Daily Elementary School, has been named this week’s HISD Star Educator. Khaliq's approach to education is characterized by her positive outlook and belief that every experience is a learning opportunity.

Khaliq took on the role of principal at Daily in 2023, aiming to transform the struggling campus. Her trust in students and staff has contributed to improved grade-level performance and fostered confidence in tackling change.

Starting her career at HISD in 2016 as an elementary school teacher and Campus Reading Specialist, Khaliq later worked at Ortiz Middle School as a Teacher Specialist and Magnet Coordinator before becoming Assistant Principal in 2021. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of Houston and a Masters of Education focused on Urban Education and Leadership from Texas A&M.

Khaliq shared insights into her educational journey: "I was a child who loved school, not just for the academics, but for the sense of belonging and camaraderie from peers and teachers." She highlighted subjects like choir, printshop, humanities, and philosophy as shaping her confidence.

Reflecting on her time with HISD, she said: "My favorite memory thus far is seeing the smiling faces of our students and staff when they reach that pivotal moment of growth." She also noted her pride in continuing her mother's legacy as an HISD educator.

Khaliq expressed admiration for Houston's diversity: "This city doesn’t just accept differences; it celebrates them." She believes this diversity enriches both personal experiences and community engagement at Daily Elementary.

Looking ahead to the upcoming school year, Khaliq aims to enhance instructional quality further: "Our goal this year is to elevate our high-quality instruction even further... we’re building on that foundation... creating an even stronger academic environment for all our students."
