The University of Houston has reported that the sculpture entitled “Witness,” by Shahzia Sikander, located in the Cullen Family Plaza at the center of its campus, has been vandalized. The incident is currently under investigation by local authorities.

"We understand the strong feelings of the affected community and will work with the artist to determine the next steps," a university spokesperson stated. At present, a tarp covers the piece to protect it from further damage rather than to obscure it from view.

The university expressed hope to address the situation and collaborate with the artist next week. However, efforts are currently hampered as their team is dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Beryl, which has had a significant impact on many individuals in Houston.
