HISD’s Energy and Sustainability Department is making strides towards a waste-free future with its collaborative Zero-Waste Initiative. Analyst Stephanie Walker and her team have been working diligently to educate and inspire teachers and administrators across HISD campuses.

"The initiation of the zero-waste program at HISD was inspired by the District’s commitment to environmental stewardship," stated Walker. "We aim to achieve several key goals throughout this initiative, including reducing the amount of waste sent to the landfills, minimizing the District’s environmental footprint, and educating students and staff about the importance of waste reduction."

The Zero-Waste Initiative aims to reduce and ultimately eliminate waste at its source in HISD schools by promoting reusable options and implementing recycling and composting programs. Walker emphasized the importance of education in this initiative, with plans to expand workshops and training sessions to instill sustainability awareness in students and staff.

Partnerships with companies like Tricon Energy, Lyondellbasell, and Exxon Mobil have allowed for valuable insights to be shared with student conservationists during school visits. These collaborations are essential in building a more sustainable future.

HISD Energy and Sustainability Director Kirby Williams expressed satisfaction with the early success of the Zero-Waste Initiative, noting the support received from academic staff and leadership. As the program progresses into its second year, Williams acknowledged the work ahead to achieve their waste reduction goals.

Looking ahead, Walker anticipates the participation of 20 to 40 more campuses in the upcoming school year. The ultimate goal is to shift waste habits within HISD towards increased recycling of food, plastic, e-waste, and paper goods. This shift is not only beneficial for the environment but also has the potential to reduce waste-removal costs for the District, redirecting those funds to other purposes.

The Energy and Sustainability Department's commitment to creating a waste-free environment in HISD is an inspiring step towards a more sustainable future.
