Houston Texans safety Jimmie Ward visited Askew Elementary School to present his new children's book, “Jimmie Ward’s Nutritional ABC’s For Active Kids,” to students. Ward emphasized the importance of education, sleep, and healthy eating in achieving success, stating, “This is awesome. This is big for me and is just a way for me to give back some of the information I learned throughout my journey.”

The visit coincided with National Nutrition Month, and Assistant Principal Leanene Garr Carriere expressed excitement, saying, “Our students, family, faculty and staff are thrilled to celebrate school nutrition, and we are honored to have Mr. Jimmie Ward come to our campus to share his wonderful, informative book and to talk to us about the importance of eating right and nutrition.”

Ward's book introduces children to new foods and healthy eating habits through the alphabet. Counselor Tyrone Shealy highlighted the importance of healthy eating habits on academic performance and emotional well-being, stating, “We’re so happy to have Mr. Jimmie Ward here to reiterate that to our students.”

Ward generously provided signed copies of the book for each student to take home. Additionally, HISD’s Nutrition Services department offered healthy snack options of mandarins and grapes during the visit.
