A vehicular accident in Downtown Houston on the morning of Nov. 11 claimed the lives of six people, including three former University of Houston (UH) Cougars football team members. One of the players was D.J. Hayden, who was taken in the first round of the 2013 National Football League (NFL) Draft by the then-Oakland Raiders.

"ESPN reported that a car sped through a red light and caused the collision", said law enforcement. ESPN also reported that four people, including the three ex-Cougars, were pronounced dead at the scene while two more perished after being rushed to a nearby hospital. Another former UH student-athlete, Lewis, sustained injuries but is expected to make a full recovery.

According to Houston ABC affiliate KTRK News, people who knew Hayden, McMillan, and Oragwu – all Fort Bend County natives – said that the three remained close after graduating from UH. The station reported that the accident occurred hours before UH was slated to play its homecoming game against the University of Cincinnati. Regardless of the Cougars dropping the contest, it paled in comparison to what had happened to the Cougar community.

Houston NBC station KPRC News reported that "the Houston Texans also offered their condolences to the family and friends of the three who died in the accident."
