Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo is honoring her part of a failed wager after the Texas Rangers emerged as the champions of the 2023 American League Championship Series (ALCS) against the Houston Astros. Hidalgo, along with other Houston-area officials, had placed friendly bets with their counterparts in North Texas. As per the terms of the wager, Hidalgo and other local leaders are now required to support the Rangers.

In a tweet on October 25, Hidalgo expressed her acceptance of the outcome, saying, "Welp, a bet’s a bet. Today I’m rocking Rangers gear with a mix of humility [and] pride." Despite her allegiance to the Astros, Hidalgo is taking the high road and supporting the Rangers Baseball Foundation. She congratulated the Rangers on their victory and emphasized the importance of sportsmanship both on and off the field.

The Astros had a disappointing performance in the ALCS, losing Games 1 and 2 at their home stadium, Minute Maid Park. They managed to bounce back and win Games 3, 4, and 5 at Globe Life Field. However, they ultimately lost Games 6 and 7 to the Rangers, who secured their first pennant since 2011. This marked the second time in postseason history that the Astros failed to win a home game, with the 2019 Washington Nationals being the only other team to achieve this feat.

Despite the rivalry between the Astros and the Rangers, Hidalgo's support for the Rangers Baseball Foundation showcases her commitment to good sportsmanship. The 2023 World Series between the Rangers and the Arizona Diamondbacks is set to begin on October 27.
