Galveston Ball High School Tornadoes football team celebrated their first victory at the newly renovated Kermit Courville Stadium with a resounding 62-28 win over Houston Sterling. After nearly a year of renovations, the stadium reopened to the public on September 15th. The game marked the first district contest for Ball High in 2023, and they wasted no time in dominating their opponents.
The Galveston County Daily News reported that the Tornadoes' one-yard touchdown run by Justis Thomas set the tone for the game after a lightning delay. The newly installed electronic scoreboard at Courville Stadium was kept busy, changing a total of nine times in favor of Ball High. Sophomore quarterback Kyden Barker's five touchdown passes played a crucial role in securing the victory for the home team.
The renovations at Courville Stadium included the addition of artificial field turf, a new electronic scoreboard, upgraded concession areas, locker rooms, stadium lighting, and restrooms. However, the press boxes are still being worked on and will be unavailable to the public until further notice, according to the Galveston Independent School District.
Ball High's victory not only delighted the team but also marked a promising start to their 2023 campaign. Last season, they achieved an impressive 8-0 record in district play and made it to the playoffs, only to be defeated by Magnolia West. The victory over Houston Sterling places the Tornadoes at 1-0 in District 9-5A-I competition and 3-1 overall.
After a bye week, Ball High will face Houston Sharpstown on September 30th. With the excitement of playing in their newly renovated stadium and the momentum from their first victory, the Tornadoes are looking to continue their winning streak and build on their successful 2022 season.
