Montgomery Independent School District Superintendent Dr. Heath Morrison recently announced he will step down from his position.
“My time in Montgomery has truly been an amazing journey and I could not be more grateful for the opportunity to serve as superintendent of this outstanding school district,” Morrison said in a July 12 press release. “It was an extremely difficult decision, but I have been presented with an opportunity to lead an organization that is working to solve arguably the most serious challenge impacting education. As a servant leader, I felt called to consider this next step in my leadership journey.”
Morrison assumed the superintendent position in July 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the release stated. One of the first things Morrison did was implement a return-to-school plan that earned the district the distinction of being among the first in Texas and the nation to re-open campuses for in-class learning. The MISD had 95% of its student population in the classroom for the 2020-2021 school year.
Voters also approved a $326 million bond package that called for the addition of a new high school, the expansion of an existing school, and district-wide improvements in May 2022, according to the release. Morrison also prioritized employee compensation and school safety during his time in office, as well as maintaining a balanced budget.
“The people in this district, everyone from the teachers to the students, parents, and bus drivers, are truly what make this place special,” Morrison said.
Morrison earned a bachelor’s degree in political science and government from the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia, as well as master’s and doctorate degrees from the University of Maryland, according to his LinkedIn profile.
The school board plans to meet before Aug. 1 to talk about the leadership transition, the release stated.
