Houston Open organizers announced on Tuesday that the Bayou City’s premier Professional Golf Association (PGA) event, which has been slated to be played again next spring, will be held March 25-31, per reports from Houston-based media outlets.
Last held in the fall, the Houston Open won’t be played this year.
Houston CBS affiliate KHOU reported that the Astros Golf Foundation said it has been half a decade since the Houston Open teed off in the spring.
The current winner is the Salt Lake City, Utah-born Tony Finau.
“There couldn’t be a better date for the Houston Open in 2024,” Astros Golf Foundation leader Giles Kibbe said, KHOU reported. “This is great for the Houston Open, great for the City of Houston and great for the many local charities that we support.”
Citing KHOU, Houston Daily reported last month the purse for the Houston Open jumped from $8.4 million to $9.1 million and has been classified as a non-designated event, which means the PGA Tour’s top players don’t have to play in it.
The publication reported that the event serves as the Astros Foundation’s largest fundraiser, as well as generates nearly $90 million into the local economy.
The Memorial Park Golf Course is the site of the Houston Open dating back to 2020.
The event will precede the prestigious Masters Tournament in Augusta, Georgia, by two weeks in 2024, Houston NPR affiliate Houston Public Media (HPM) reported.
PGA Tour head Tyler Dennis said in a press release obtained by HPM that the Houston Open possesses all the makings of a “premier PGA Tour event.”
“A true competitive test in Memorial Park Golf Course, an engaged fan base and a commitment to better the community, led by the Astros Golf Foundation," Dennis said in the release. "We look forward to the Houston Open's return to spring and the impact it will have on our 2024 FedExCup season."
