The stadium that houses the Houston Dynamo and Dash has undergone a name change, according to a press release.
When both clubs play the first home matches of their 2023 campaigns, they’ll do so at Shell Energy Stadium, the release said.
It’s the third name change in a decade for the 21,000-seat soccer-specific venue brought forth by a new agreement between the Houston Dynamo Football Club (F.C.) and Shell Energy.
The stadium opened its doors in 2012 as BBVA Compass Stadium – and in 2019 – was rechristened BBVA Stadium.
PNC Stadium, its most recent name, came from a corporate merger two years ago, Houston ABC affiliate KTRK reported.
Dynamo majority owner and chairman Ted Segal said the franchise is “ecstatic” to further its relationship with Shell Energy.
“We look forward to welcoming our passionate fans to Shell Energy Stadium this spring following an extensive renovation to enhance the experience of all guests,” Segal said, per the release. “Thank you to the Shell Energy team for their commitment to our organization and to Houston.”
Shell Energy, in turn, expressed its enthusiasm with the stadium’s new moniker.
“Driven by a shared vision, we are proud to present Houston's home for soccer,” the company tweeted. “We can't wait to welcome you home to Shell Energy Stadium this season!”
Per the Dynamo, fans who visit the stadium will see a significant amount of Shell Energy signage and branding.
The new agreement calls for its parties to work on various integrated energy and decarbonization solutions at the venue, as well as important community initiatives, according to the release.
The Dynamo, who finished 2022 with 10 wins, six draws and 18 losses, begin their regular season next month.
