Most programs would love to be in the position that Willie Amendola’s Tomball Concordia Lutheran Crusaders are in now.
According to a VYPE Houston report that was ran by Houston NBC affiliate KPRC, the new Crusaders football head coach has the team on a perfect winning streak just before it enters district play.
You have to go back a half-decade to the last time the Crusaders had a 4-0 mark.
Amendola touted the Crusaders’ toughness as a factor in their impressive string of victories, calling it “a renewable resource,” VYPE Houston reported.
“You can make kids tough and confident by coaching them up,” he said in the report. “You might not make them the fastest or most athletic, but they can always be tough.”
According to the program’s Facebook page, its fourth and latest win came at the expense of Houston Lutheran South Academy on Friday.
Sophomore quarterback Louden Sebree lobbed a successful Hail Mary pass in the game’s final moments to deliver the Crusaders a 28-21 win.
The euphoria from winning their homecoming game is buttressed by a bye preceding their first-ever matchup against The Woodlands Christian Academy on the road on Friday, Sept. 30.
Concordia Lutheran is the latest stop in Amendola’s lengthy tour of duty throughout Greater Houston, per VYPE Houston.
His résumé includes the 2011 state championship he won at Houston Dekaney as its head coach, something he hopes to duplicate with the Crusaders.
Coincidentally, Concordia Lutheran competed in the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools (TAPPS) state title game that same season.
“These are some smart kids eager to win and they see it,” Amendola told VYPE Houston. “Now, we have a culture of being more physical and tougher.”
