More than a week after he was called up from Triple-A Sugar Land, rookie Korey Lee figured prominently in the Houston Astros’ 6-1 victory over the Oakland Athletics on Sunday.
According to a report on the Astros’ website, the 23-year-old Lee turned in a career game not too far from where he grew up, hitting 3-for-4 with three runs batted in (RBI) to the delight of his loved ones in attendance at Oakland Coliseum.
It was Lee’s second start since his Major League Baseball (MLB) debut on Friday, July 1, per the team.
Lee, who attended the nearby University of California, Berkeley, manifested that he would step up in a big way in his old stomping grounds, the report said.
"I said it was going to get done here, and I did it," Lee, who was promoted after the Astros placed Jason Castro on the injured list (IL), said. "We got that out of the way, and now we just get to play."
The Astros’ No. 2 prospect notched his career first hit and RBI in the fifth inning – a single to left field – that scored centerfielder Jake Meyers, and two innings later, knocked the ball toward left field again to send Meyers home again in addition to designated hitter (DH) Aledmys Diaz, the team reported.
Lee's last hit of the afternoon was a single into shallow left field.
Houston NBC affiliate KPRC reported that the Astros selected Lee in the first round of the 2019 MLB Draft.
Lee crafted a .226 batting average with 10 HR and 40 RBI through 64 games this year, the station reported.
