A Houston Independent School District (HISD) parent has alleged one of its teachers took his teenage son to a drag show, Houston CBS affiliate KHOU reported.
According to the station, Sadrach Terwogt, a single father of two, made the claim at a recent HISD board meeting, prompting the school district, Gov. Greg Abbott and the Texas Education Agency (TEA) to provide responses.
Terwogt explained to the board that the unidentified teacher brought his then-16-year-old son to the drag show three years ago though the boy was underage.
"It was really bad," the father said, per KHOU. "It was a really bad experience. We are supposed to trust teachers."
Terwogt claimed that his son recorded videos before and during the show in question, according to the report.
He further accused HISD of failing to address the issue, saying he went to his son's school the day after the show to get answers to no avail, the station reported.
Terwogt insinuated that something inappropriate went on between his son and the teacher, KHOU reported.
Abbott, a Republican, tweeted, "I am directing the Texas Education Agency to investigate this matter."
The station reported that HISD and the TEA issued statements to Terwogt's claim.
"The viral video making the rounds on social media references an incident from 2019," the school district said in its statement. "Houston ISD was made aware of allegations of teacher misconduct and launched an investigation in 2019. The teacher has not worked for HISD since April 2019. Because of laws requiring confidentiality in educator employment records, we are unable to release any further information."
The TEA stated that it received a complaint pertaining to HISD.
"The complaint is currently under jurisdictional review," the state agency's statement read. "No further info available at this time."
