The Houston Astros have signed 25-year-old designated hitter (DH) Yordan Álvarez to a six-year, $115 million contraction extension, per a report on the team's website.
The Astros secure Álvarez's services through the 2028 season.
"Signed. Sealed. Delivered," the team's official Twitter account proclaimed.
The agreement's financial terms weren't disclosed, but according to the report, Álvarez is expected to earn a $5 million signing bonus, $7 million in 2023, $10 million in 2024, $15 million in 2025 and $26 million during the remaining three years afterward.
The move occurred more than two months after former Astros shortstop Carlos Correa inked a three-year, $105.3 million deal with the Minnesota Twins.
Álvarez, who hails from Cuba, came to Houston in 2016 via a trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers that's widely considered lore among the Astros fanbase.
Since his 2019 Major League Baseball (MLB) debut, Álvarez has proven to be a lethal weapon at the plate, producing a career batting average of .291 with 77 home runs (HR) and 220 RBI through Sunday (June 5).
The Cuban slugger has two World Series appearances, an American League (AL) Rookie of the Year Award and an AL Championship Series (ALCS) Most Valuable Player (MVP) Award to his name.
Houston ABC affiliate KTRK reported that Álvarez smashed four HRs during the team's latest road trip, a 6-3 sojourn away from Minute Maid Park.
Aside from affixing his signature to make his extension official, the station reported, Álvarez also earned AL Player of the Week for his highlight worthy hits against the Oakland Athletics and the Kansas City Royals.
