The Houston Texans joined their counterparts in the sports world on Wednesday (June 1) in lending their support to the Uvalde community following last month's mass shooting at an elementary school that killed 19 students and two teachers, according to a report from Houston CBS affiliate KHOU.

The station reported that the National Football League (NFL) franchise announced that it's making a $400,000 donation to the Robb School Memorial Fund.

According to team CEO Cal McNair, KHOU reported, the players thought of collecting money for the victims' families.

The Texans' donation consisted of $200,000 from players, coaches and staff and the front office's match, per the station.

“Texans care about Texans, especially in times of triumph and tragedy," McNair said, KHOU reported. “I’m so proud of our players for championing this effort and was inspired to support our neighbors in Uvalde alongside them."

According to the station, the Texans intend to lend their voices on the matter of gun violence.

"I also know we have a great responsibility to lend our voices to important and meaningful conversations that bring awareness to senseless gun violence," McNair said, KHOU reported.

The players and staff will wear orange on Friday (June 3), which is Gun Violence Awareness Day, as a show of solidarity toward the people of Uvalde, a South Texas city of 16,000 some 84 miles west of San Antonio, per the station.

Yahoo! Sports reported that the Dallas Cowboys also donated $400,000 to go toward the Uvalde community.

According to the website, the Cowboys will give $200,000 to the the Robb School Memorial Fund while the Uvalde Strong Fund will receive the remaining $200,000.

“There are simply no words to describe the pain and sorrow that we feel for the Uvalde community," Cowboys executive vice president Charlotte Jones said, per Yahoo! Sports. "We hold them tight in our thoughts and continued prayers."
