Reliant and the Houston Texans have awarded six Houston-area student-athletes with $10,000 scholarships, per a news release

It's the 17th year in which the partnership has overseen the Scholarships for Champions program, with more than $600,000 allocated, the release said.

"Since 2005, the Scholarships for Champions program has helped over 100 students achieve their dreams of attending college," Reliant's official Twitter account posted.

According to the release, the recipients hail from the Alvin, Fort Bend, Hempstead, Humble and Spring Branch independent school districts and play multiple sports.

Each awardee was secretly nominated by their teachers, mentors and coaches.

Scholarships were awarded to: Aaron Davis, Summer Creek High School; Josiah Ibarra, Elkins High School; Gabriel Mata, Northbrook High School; Ariel Mayes, Hempstead High School; Miranda Medina, St. Pius X High School and Trevor Singleton, Alvin High School, per the release.

“Each Scholarships for Champions student has a remarkable story, demonstrating perseverance and dedication in academics and athletics while being an inspiring change-maker in their community and family,” Reliant President Elizabeth Killinger said in the release. “Their futures are bright, and it is an honor for Reliant to celebrate them through scholarship.”

To qualify for the program, Reliant said on its website, prospective awardees must attend school full-time with their graduate date set in the spring, plan to pursue a college degree in the upcoming fall semester of their freshman year and letter in a varsity sport for at least two years.

"[These students] have exhibited remarkable leadership on the field, in the classroom and throughout the community," according to the electricity provider.
