Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) star and Houston native Brittney Griner has had her pre-trial detention in Russia on alleged drug charges extended through next month, according to The Associated Press (AP), Houston CBS affiliate KHOU reported.
Alexander Boikov, an attorney representing the 31-year-old Phoenix Mercury center and Nimitz High School alumna, divulged to the AP that the 30-day extension is a sign Griner's case would be heard soon, per KHOU.
"We did not receive any complaints about the detention conditions from our client,” Boikov said, according to the report.
The AP reported, per the station, that Griner appeared at the hearing in a red hoodie and handcuffs.
Griner, who went No. 1 in the 2013 draft after leading Baylor to a national championship, was in Russia where she played professionally during the WNBA's offseason to supplement her income.
Authorities at a Moscow airport earlier this year discovered hashish oil in her luggage and subsequently detained her.
According to the AP, a member of the Public Monitoring Commission, a Russian government-backed body tasked with monitoring prisoners' conditions, said that the 6-foot-9 Griner occupies a prison cell with two other women held on drug charges.
The women are reported to have served as Griner's interpreters because of their ability to speak English, per the AP.
The AP reported that the cell's beds aren't built for someone of her stature.
The current WNBA season proceeded with the absent Griner heavily weighing on the minds of those affiliated with its 12 franchises, including her own.
The Houston Daily reported that the WNBA moved to honor her earlier this month with a decal bearing her initials and No. 42 on the sideline of each team's court during the 2022 season.
U.S. officials have determined Griner to be "wrongfully detained" by Russia, which is more than two months into a war with Ukraine.
