Houston Astros manager Dusty Baker's entry into the 2,000-win club earned him his own day.
The City of Houston issued a proclamation declaring it "Dusty Baker Day" on Wednesday (May 4) after the 72-year-old skipper became the 12th overall manager and the first black manager to notch 2,000 victories by way of the Astros' 4-0 triumph over the Seattle Mariners, according to Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner's official Twitter account.
Turner was at Minute Maid Park for Houston's matinee matchup against Seattle to present Baker with the proclamation.
The mayor and Baker were joined by owner Jim Crane and general manager James Click in a pregame ceremony ahead of what eventually became the Astros' 7-2 win over the visitors, Baker's 2,001st victory.
"Congratulations to @astros Coach Dusty Baker for winning his 2,000th career win," Turner said in a tweet. "Our city is proud that you were able to achieve this special milestone on our home field. Thank you for your friendship and for leading this team over the last couple of seasons."
Houston NBC affiliate KPRC reported that starting pitcher Justin Verlander continued his comeback from a two-year absence with two runs yielded through 6 2/3 innings on the mound while third baseman Alex Bregman, who is experiencing a health-related resurgence himself, went 3-for-3 at the plate to hit three RBIs.
Wednesday's win caps a three-game tilt with the Mariners which the Astros swept, per the station.
The Astros were dealt with another health scare for second baseman Jose Altuve during the game.
More than two weeks after he fell to the ground while heading to first base because of a left hamstring strain, Houston CBS affiliate KHOU reported, Altuve sustained right groin soreness after he hit himself with a foul ball and was forced to exit the field.
Altuve had just returned to the team after 10 days on the injured list and a weekend-long rehabilitation stint with the Sugar Land Space Cowboys, the Astros' Triple-A affiliate.
