A Houston-based senior living provider has awarded 35 students enrolled in the nursing program at San Jacinto College (SJC) with scholarships, according to a press release. West Janisch Health Care Center presented SJC with a $17,500 check to cover the scholarships, the release said.

"It is our honor to contribute to the upcoming generation of health care heroes," West Janisch administrator Beverly Mustafa said in the release. "We need each and every one of you more than ever before."

According to the release, West Janisch provides rehabilitation, memory and skilled nursing care and is one of 21 members in the Health Services Management portfolio.

The facility has private rooms and rehabilitation services in addition to a secure memory care neighborhood for Alzheimer's patients and others who suffer from other types of memory loss.

The release said that the West Janisch Health Care Scholarship Fund was established to assist students who are studying nursing at SJC.

It helps students enrolled in the school's Associate Degree Nursing, LVN to ADN Transition and Vocational Nurse Level 2 Certificate programs.

According to SJC's website, the average cost of tuition for an in-district nursing student is close to $2,500.

One of the 35 scholarship recipients is a student identified as Connor B.

In a letter published by the San Jacinto Foundation, Connor explained that the scholarship will help him as he struggles to make ends meet.

"It is my core belief that I am here to help others," Connor, who shifted from studying pharmacy to nursing, wrote.

Mustafa wished all the scholarship recipients the best as they pursue their studies.
