Carlos Correa’s free-agent price tag just got a little more expensive.
The Houston Astros shortstop added to his already impressive resume by capturing the 2021 Rawlings Platinum Glove Award for the American League.
The Rawlings Platinum Glove goes to the best defensive player in each league and to the best defensive team. Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado won the award for the National League for the fifth time.
The Gold Glove teams were Houston and St. Louis.
This season Correa helped the Astros reach their third World Series in the last five years. They lost to the Atlanta Braves in six games.
Correa, a much-in-demand free agent, led the Major Leagues in defensive wins above replacement (WAR) at 3.0, according to MLB.com. He also led all American League shortstops with 21 defensive runs saved. He becomes only the second Astros shortstop to win a Gold Glove. The only other Houston shortstop to win a Gold Glove is Robert Metzger, going back to 1973.
Correa and Dodgers shortstop Corey Seager head the list of free agents at their position. Both are getting strong looks from teams like the Yankees.
"It's certainly the year of the shortstop, with a lot of high-end talented players coming out at the same time," Cashman told reporters, including MLB.com's Bryan Hoch, last week during the general managers meeting. "It's an impressive group of players, no doubt. I'm sure that they're excited about the opportunities that are going to present for them. I'm sure the agents are looking forward to doing business."
