After finishing in last place for the second straight season, the Houston Dynamo have decided not to bring back head coach Tab Ramos for another season, according to MLSsoccer.com
Ramos became the Dynamo coach in October 2019 and his contract ended at the the close of this season. This year the Dynamo had a record of 6-16-12 that put them at the bottom of the Western Conference and the team opted not to extend the contract. Ramos went on Twitter to thank the Dynamo players and staff, along with the City of Houston and its fans.
“Big THANK YOU to everyone at @HoustonDynamo, all players, full staff & more importantly to all FANS in this amazing city … always made me feel at home. … The staff & I gave it all we had & always represented you with pride. ... Wishing you all the best!” Ramos tweeted on Nov. 4.
Ramos is a former midfielder for the U.S. national soccer team and was also the coach of the under-20 national team for eight seasons. The team has not announced a new head coach. MLSsoccer.com reported that the search started immediately.
The Dynamo have only made the playoffs once since 2014 and according to MLSsoccer.com, the team had a combined 10-26-21 record in the two last-place seasons with Ramos at the helm.
The Dynamo also did not extend the contracts of assistant coaches Omid Namazi and Martin Vasquez.
Click2Houston.com reported that newly-hired general manager Pat Onstad thanked Ramos for his work with the team, saying that he has made a positive impact on the team’s culture, and has also put Houston on the map for players within the MLS and those coming from other countries.
“There is a strong foundation here and we are grateful to Tab for that,” Onstad said.
The Dynamo are under new ownership with Ted Segal taking on the role four months ago. MLSsoccer.com reported that the coaching shift could be just the beginning of changes for Houston during the offseason, as Segal has said he will be looking to upgrade the roster as well.
