Kilgore College star receiver Willie McCoy has verbally committed to Houston, giving the Cougars their eighth recruit in a still growing 2022 class.
“Committed,” the Bellaire High grad posted on his Twitter page, adding “first and foremost, I would like to thank God for blessing me and giving me an opportunity to continue my academic and athletic career. I would also like to thank Kilgore College for allowing me to show my playmaking abilities on the football field.”
With the Cougars off to a 4-1 start this season, things are looking up for Coach Dana Holgorsen and company and landing McCoy, who settled on Houston over the likes of Alabama State, Fresno State, UCF and Texas San-Antonio, only add to the good vibes.
“They have been in touch with me since right around the beginning of this season,” added the 6-foot, 185-pound McCoy, who will have three years of eligibility remaining. “I like how the coaches built a relationship with me, I could feel the love.”
Even with the Cougars’ being on the rise, McCoy said he sees opportunity.
“I feel like I have a good opportunity to be on the field,” he said. “They just like that I am a playmaker that can go out and make plays. They like fast receivers who can go out and make plays.”
McCoy said the chance to go back home was also a determining factor.
“They needed help in the receiver room and my family lives there in Houston so that was a big advantage,” he said. “Me going to any other school, knowing what I’ve got going on at home would be too far, it would be stressful.”
