Regardless of starting quarterback Davis Mills' performance against the Buffalo Bills, his team is still showing support and hope for the player's future.
Mills stepped into the starter's role almost a month ago when Tyrod Taylor went down with an injury. The Stanford product completed 38 of 67 passing attempts for 357 yards, two touchdowns and five interceptions through Oct. 3, Sports Illustrated reported.
Sports Illustrated reports that a third-round selection, Mills is part of a rookie quarterback class that has struggled since the beginning of the season.
"I think he’s been having an awesome week of practice," Veteran Receiver Brandin Cooks said, told by the Texans Daily. "Just the way he’s commanding the offense, his confidence. Not just in the pass game but in the run game as well. He’s continued to go, and that’s what you love about a young guy. That game didn’t faze him. He’s willing to get back to work and get better."
According to ESPN, Texans offensive coordinator Tim Kelly also feels that Mills shouldn't be defined by his mistakes.
“The big thing that we’re continuing to preach with him is that we’ve got to protect the football,” Houston Texans Offensive Coordinator Tim Kelly said, told by ESPN. “Can’t have these situations where borderline careless decisions were made. When we’re starting to force balls and try to do things in tight windows that we really don’t want to do, we’ve just got to eliminate the careless mistakes there.”
Coach David Culley said that how Mills' reacted to his mistakes is a sign of promise for the player's future.
“Most rookies going through what he went through on Sunday, you would [be] really concerned, but I’m not concerned,” Culley said, told by ESPN. “I see the same look in his eyes. He comes and prepares the same way. We’ve sat down, and we’ve talked one on one on what we need from you, what’s expected from you for us to move forward and for us to have a chance to get this offense to where it needs to be.”
