Willowridge's fast-rising sophomore receiver Marxquise Hayes was recently tabbed Houston Chronicle Athlete of the Week.
In the Eagles’ 21-20 overtime win over Sharpstown, Hayes bagged a pair of touchdown grabs, including a 23-yard game-winning score. Overall, Hayes had three catches for 105 yards. The versatile star also had an interception on defense, marking the second straight week he registered both an interception and a touchdown catch.
“Marxquise Hayes is an excellent young man and a scholar-athlete,” Willowridge coach Ramon Chin-Young told The Chronicle. “He is a returning letterman for us and started as a true freshman last year. The past two games, he has been a clutch player on both sides of the football.”
All the hard work is paying off for the Eagles, now 3-1 overall and winners of their first three matches in District 11-5A, Division II play.
Sophomore quarterback Blaize Covington and fellow second-year wideout Travis Willis have also starred for Willowridge.
Behind the talented trio, the Eagles finished 7-3 last year in their first season together at the high-school level.
