New Klein Collins volleyball coach Kasey Price is excited by the possibilities.
"Look, Klein Collins hasn't been the top dog in the district, and we are going to get there," Price recently told Vype.com.
After serving as an assistant last season on the Kingwood Park Class 5A state championship, Price has taken over at Klein Collins with a vision of making things like they were where she’s been before.
“We, over me,” Price said of the team’s new motto. “It takes more than one person to change the game. I’m really strong on teamwork, leadership and discipline. It’s starting to really define the team.”
Price is hoping those standards come to mean times to remember for Klein Collins.
“Go further than they did last year, that’s really what we’re trying to do,” he said of the team’s goals for the season. “Just keep our nose down, really stay focused on what the goals are and what our motto is and making sure that we’re holding everyone accountable to try to achieve that goal.”
With the Lady Tigers off to a 13-5 preseason start, Price still knows things won’t be easy.
“You can’t just arrive at success and with our goals being a state championship, we know there’s going to be valleys and mountains,” he said. “How we’re going to take that on together and not just how we’re going to take it on as one person.”
Georgia State University recruit Erin Wyatt leads the way for Klein Collins. The star outside hitter is one of nine seniors on hand for Price, first season, joining the likes of middle/outside hitter Emma McWhorter, who is committed to the University of Louisiana Monroe, and transfer defensive specialist Kaylin Goudeau.
Defensive specialists Tiffany Amaya, Lacey Judd, Erin Farina and Allie Renteria also figure into the mix, as does outside hitter Audri Crawford and opposite hitter Sydnee Carrier.
Finally, senior Broke Box is back from injury, and is joined by emerging second-year players Anna Blaine and Olivia Murillo in adding more star power. Junior Ariana Goode also stands out in the middle.
“I really wanted them to leave a legacy and set a foundation for the future of this program, for Klein Collins to be known for volleyball,” said Price, adding that he sees the Lady Tigers going to the playoffs. “The potential that I see in them can be at a state championship, I fully believe that."
More and more, Price seems to like his chances.
"Some teams don't take us as a threat and we are pushing each other to change that," he said. "The girls know what the expectations are and we will hold each other accountable. We will attack each day as a winner."
