In a time when passing tends to dominate most offensive schemes, the reigning state champion Katy Tigers are gobbling up yards and points the old-school way: Running the football.
Katy junior running back Seth Davis enjoyed a successful debut season last year, a season that saw him capture offensive MVP honors at the Class 6A title game.
Suiting up for his second campaign under legendary head coach Gary Joseph, Davis is the lynchpin of Katy’s vaunted ground attack.
"Seth is a great kid. He doesn't complain about anything,” Joseph told VYPE Houston.
The high schools sports website reported that Davis formed last year’s prolific backfield with older brother Jalen.
Usually, it’s the eldest that is up front and center, but the younger Davis was the one who had the breakthrough for Katy.
"It was scary at first last season," Davis told VYPE Houston. "But eventually, I got the plays down. I stopped being scared. I just went. I almost had to be confident. I didn't have any other choice."
The college recruiting website 247Sports reported that the 5-foot-8-inch, 170-pound bullet train amassed almost 2,000 rushing yards and 18 scores last year.
Davis’s astonishing varsity debut as a sophomore made him one of Joseph’s 11 returning starters to watch.
Dating back to the championship game win, Katy is in the midst of a five-game winning streak.
The Tigers as of Sept. 17 are 4-0 after a close victory over The Woodlands Highlanders.
Texas HS Football reported that Davis figured prominently in the 21-14 win, putting together 222 rushing yards plus a pair of touchdowns.
Davis and the Tigers begin district play next week against Katy Seven Lakes.
