Houston will be housing Tulane University students who were evacuated due to the damage caused by Hurricane Ida in New Orleans, according to a Click2Houston report.
Students will stay at the Hyatt Regency and Marriott Marquis. In the event that students are unable to return home from Houston, Tulane University will also provide temporary housing until the school reopens.
"Hurricane Ida has forced the relocation @Tulane, Houston @HOUTulaneAlumni would like to know what we can do to help as you send students our way," Houston City Councilwoman Abbie Kamin stated on Twitter.
Tulane freshman Annabeth Cohen confirmed to KPRC 2 that water from the hurricane caused damage to some areas of the campus and dorm rooms.
The approximately 1,800 students who began arriving on Aug. 31 will miss at least five weeks of class until the school reopens in mid-October.
Gov. John Bel Edwards described Ida as one of the most powerful hurricanes to hit Louisiana since 1850. The storm made landfall on the state's southern shore around noon on Aug. 29, coinciding with the 16th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina's landfall, according to CBS News.
