On Aug. 21, an off-duty New Orleans police officer was gunned down in Houston.
ABC13 News reported that officer Everett Briscoe was shot and killed at a restaurant in the Galleria area. He had been in Houston for only a few hours at the time of his death and a friend he was traveling with was also injured during the shooting.
"I am extremely heartbroken about the death of my dear friend and brother Detective Everette Briscoe who was killed while off-duty in Houston, Texas," New Orleans Police Chief Shaun Ferguson wrote in an Aug. 22 Twitter post. "I am praying for the family of Detective Briscoe and for the family of the second victim in this incident."
Briscoe was in town to visit members of the Zulu Social Club, a New Orleans organization known for its elaborate Zulu parade each year during Mardi Gras.
Houston City Councilwoman Abbie Kamin, a native Houstonian who attended and graduated from New Orleans's Tulane University, vowed that Briscoe's killing would not go unanswered, WDSU News reported.
"#Houston and #NOLA are sister cities. We’ve been there for each other through some of our hardest times. This weekend was no different," Kamin wrote in an Aug. 23 Twitter post.
Louisiana Congressman and fellow Zulu member Troy A. Carter also took to Twitter to voice his condolences for Briscoe's family.
"Lifting up the memory of my friend and Zulu brother NOPD Officer Everett Briscoe today," Carter wrote in an Aug. 22 Twitter post. "Praying for his family and the other victim in this senseless act of violence. A tragic day for our community. Rest in peace."
Briscoe, aged 41, was a 13-year veteran of the NOPD and was a homicide detective for most of his career.
He is survived by a wife and two sons, ages 10 and 16.
