Pasadena Dobie star quarterback Cameron Gray is back to defend what he and his defending champion District 22-6A teammates feel they rightfully own.
“Last ride 9,” Gray recently tweeted.
In all, the Longhorns, who have yet to lose in coach Kevin Berneathy's four seasons on the job, return 10 starters from a 9-1 district champion and bi-district playoff finalist. With six on offense, Gray and company don’t figure to miss in a beat executing the throwback Wing-T offense he mastered last season in passing for 1,678 yards and 18 touchdowns and rushing for nearly 500 yards and another five scores.
The rushing tandem of 5-foot-10-inch, 165-pound junior Jalen Baldwin and 6-foot-1-inch senior Trajan Davis also return in hopes of keeping Dobie’s streak alive, while 6-foot-3-inch, 295-pound senior teammates Richard Gary and 5-foot-11-inch, 290-pound Daakarey Ramsey anchor the line.
“I think Dobie’s the front runner,” Deer Park coach Austin Flynn told the Houston Chronicle. “They’ve earned it. They’re the champs. Until someone dethrones them, they’re the champs. Coach Berneathy does a hell of a job over there.”
With the Longhorns aiming for their first playoff wins since the 2014 season, the junior trio of linemen Logan Riley (5 foot 10 inches, 220 pounds) and Anforny Lee (6-foot, 205 pounds) and linebacker Nigel Hill (6-foot, 210 pounds) lead the defense.
