Running back for the League City Clear Falls team David Smith, a junior, is the biggest name among head coach Zach Head's long list of returning veterans from last year's state quarterfinals squad.

Smith is a 5-foot-9, 180-pound speedster rushed for a shade over 800 yards and hauled in a little more than 100 yards for a combined 13 scores, 11 of which were for rushing.

Last year, the Knights had incredible and memorable run to the State Quarterfinals last year, but fell to eventual State Champ Katy High, according to VypeThough Clear Falls finished third in District 24-6A, it didn't stop the Knights from marching all the way to the Region 3-6A Division II championship game where they bowed to eventual state champion Katy.

As a sophomore in 2020, Smith powered the Knights offense with his ability to take off downfield following one cut.

This year the team is returning 15 started, with 10 of them on defense. Accroding to Vype, Head's key to having a successful season this year will be building on "that inspiring postseason run," continuing with a team culture of being player-led and replacing some starters for the offense while "breaking in" the new quarterback.

Of those returning, is the powerhouse Smith.
