If Cypress Ranch freshman volleyball player Taylor Porter’s first game with the varsity is of any indication, it’s safe to say that she’ll acclimate at the high-school level just fine.
And it won’t be long until her name and the words "freshman phenom" will be used in the same sentence.
"@CyRanchVball freshman Taylor Porter (@portergirls) is one to watch on the court this fall,” VYPE Houston tweeted on Aug. 11. “The freshman had 19 kills in her varsity debut and start on Tuesday night."
Aside from making the adjustment from leading an eighth-grade squad to learning the ropes as a ninth grader on varsity, Porter has a huge legacy to uphold at Cy Ranch.
Her older sister, Cy Ranch 2021 graduate and current Louisiana Tech freshman soccer player Jordan, is among the northwest Harris County school's greatest athletes, VYPE Houston reported.
However, the younger Porter is up to the challenge as one of the top players in the Class of 2025 and a U.S.A. Volleyball selection to its U15/16 2021 US Girls National Team Development Program, VYPE Houston reported.
Porter, who began playing volleyball at the age of 11 and never looked back, considered her inclusion into the program an honor.
"It felt really good because they noticed my hard work," she told VYPE Houston. "I've tried out four times. The first two times I made it and last year I didn't make it. I was bummed out. To make it felt really special because I felt like I worked a lot harder than I did in the previous year."
Aside from prep volleyball, Porter honed her craft with established youth club Houston Skyline.
