A Houston native fresh off of competing in the Tokyo Olympics, with pitching experience of her own, will be on hand at the Astros game Aug. 6 to throw out the first pitch.
USA softball Olympian Cat Osterman, who won a silver medal in softball, has been selected by the Astros to throw out the ceremonial first pitch against the Minnesota Twins.
Osterman broke the news on Twitter and followed it up with the club's signature slogan.
"Friday 8/6 - throwing out the first pitch for the @astros #fortheH," Osterman wrote.
At the Tokyo Olympics, Team USA was undefeated until they lost to the host country in the gold-medal game, 2-1. Up until they faced Japan, Team USA had remained undefeated in tournament play.
It was eerily similar to the 2008 Beijing Olympics when Team USA was upset by Japan 3-1, and Osterman, and the team, were awarded the silver medal.
Standing at 6 feet 2 inches, Osterman attended and played for the University of Texas and boasts a very decorated resume.
She led the Longhorns to three Women's College World Series appearances (2003, 2005 and 2006) and was also named USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year each year that the Longhorns played with in the championship tournament.
Unfortunately, for fans of baseball and softball, the event won’t be held at the 2024 Paris Olympics, but it’s sure to be held when the Olympics come back stateside at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
CBS Sports speculated that this was Osterman’s last appearance at the Olympics stating that Osterman, 38, along with her teammate Monica Abbott, 35, “can be considered to be two of softball's greatest ambassadors, but Tokyo is presumably their final time on the Olympic stage.”
Osterman does have a gold medal in her collection, when Team USA defeated Australia 5-1 at the 2004 Athens Olympics.
