While Team USA men’s basketball has struggled to find the right chemistry in the Tokyo Olympic Games, the women’s team has had no such problems.
WNBA star Brittney Griner and Houston Nimitz and Baylor alumna, recently guided Team USA women's basketball to its 50th straight Olympic win.
The win streak dates back to the bronze medal game of the 1992 Olympics, when they defeated Cuba.
Since that game, Team USA women's basketball has won six straight gold medals without losing a game and have their sights set for a seventh straight medal, which would tie the USA men's basketball team's record of seven straight gold medals from 1936-1968.
Griner finished with a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds as Team USA women’s basketball won against Nigeria 81-72 in the preliminary round.
The Baylor Lady Bears took notice of Griner’s performance and congratulated her as Team USA women’s basketball are the prohibitive favorites to bring home the gold this year.
"What a performance by @usabasketball and @brittneygriner,” the Lady Bears wrote. “Congrats USA on your opening win vs. Nigeria!"
Team USA took on home team Japan on July 30 before wrapping up group play against France on Aug. 2.
Griner’s range on the court allows her to be a formidable defensive player for Team USA women’s basketball who will look at her to anchor the team from a defensive perspective, while chipping in on offense, as well.
She has been named WNBA defensive player of the year twice (2014, 2015) and helped lead the Mercury to the WNBA championship in 2014.
