Katy High School senior football star Nic Anderson has verbally committed to attend the University of Oregon.
The 6-foot-4-inch, 195-pound star made his decision clear by captioning a photo on his Twitter page “Go Ducks.”
Anderson heads to Oregon after leading Katy to the 6A-Division 11 state title, the school’s ninth overall. In all, Anderson had as many as 28 scholarship offers and settled on the Ducks over Notre Dame.
“It came down to the feel,” Anderson told Vype.com. “I had a gut feeling after that last visit to Oregon that I had a great connection with the whole program. It’s where I felt I needed to be. The coaching staff, the community and the town. It was a really great experience.”
As the recruiting maze became entangled, Anderson said he had the advantage of being able to lean on his two older brothers, both of whom also went on to play Power 5 college football after bagging state titles at Katy.
“It definitely helped having my brothers going through the process,” he said. “I would call them almost every week, update them on what I felt about different schools. My brothers were a real big help with me keeping a cool head.”
As a junior, Anderson had 30 catches for 480 yards and five touchdowns.
“My game was just in its early stages last year, having to deal with a new quarterback and helping him gain the confidence he needed,” he said. “I realized I needed to use my voice more. I used to only lead by example, but now I know my team needs to hear from me a little bit more and I feel like it helped with our quarterback and keeping him encouraged and focused.”
Anderson has big plans for his senior season.
“I just want to finish strong and lead this team to another state title,” he said. “I want to finish by celebrating with my teammates like we did last year. We definitely have a big challenge ahead of ourselves, trying to go back-to-back.”
