Vice President Kamala Harris has stated that she is meeting with Texas Democratic lawmakers who staged the walkout at the 87th legislative session to block Senate Bill 7 from being signed.
Senate Bill 7 is an election integrity measure that has drawn fire from Democrats who argue that the bill is part of an ongoing attempt by Republicans at voter suppression that disproportionately affects black and Hispanic voters. During the May 30 87th legislative session, Texas Democratic lawmakers walked out of the Capitol denying the House a quorum and effectively blocked the bill from being passed, according to New York Post.
"Texas is where we hold the line," Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo wrote in a June 10 Twitter post. "Glad to see @KamalaHarris recognizing the courageous efforts of Texas Democrats to stop SB7 in the Texas Legislature. Now we need Congress to step up and pass the #ForThePeopleAct to stop this assault on voting rights."
Harris will meet with the lawmakers at the White House on June 16, according to Texas Tribune.
While the names of the legislators in attendance haven't been shared, the House Democratic Caucus provided a list of 10 lawmakers who said they will be present at the meeting.
Texas State Rep. Jeffrey Curtis "Jeff" Leach (R-Plano) has criticized the late May walkout as a "losing strategy," according to the Dallas Express.
