The Montgomery Lady Bears golf team staged a spirited final round comeback in the UIL Class 5A State Championships, erasing a four-stroke deficit to finish second overall at the White Wing Golf Club.

“We wanted to win,” coach Kirk Thomason told Chron.com. “It’s hard to win when you’re not in that final group, but we were only four out after the first day. The kids wanted to win and before this, we had won nine out of 10 tournaments. State’s a different thing. Everybody’s at state for a reason. Our kids played so hard.”

Senior Remington Isaac sparked the Lady Bears’ comeback, finishing at even par over the two-day tournament, good for a fourth place tie overall.

On her way to Kansas State, Isaac proved reflective about her bittersweet moment.

“I would not be the golfer I am today or the person I am today without this program,” she said. “I’m extremely sad to leave it but I’m super excited for the next chapter.”

At White Wing, Alamo Heights won the crown at 33 over par, four shots ahead of Montgomery. Granbury’s Mason Lewis claimed at the individual title at 4-under with Midlothian’s Tiffany Cao finishing a stroke behind.
