The Strake Jesuit baseball team experienced some firsts in its Class 6A Region 3 semifinal series against Katy Tompkins: It was the first time the Roman Catholic private school had to fight off elimination, and by beating the Falcons, it clinched its first UIL regional final berth.
Ryan Montgomery’s two-run single midway through Game 3 helped Strake Jesuit overcome a 2-1 deficit to defeat Tompkins 5-2.
“Crusaders come from behind to defeat Tompkins in Game 3 of the Region 3 Semifinals to advance to the Region Finals,” the school’s Twitter account posted on May 29.
Since entering the postseason, the 25-12-1 Crusaders made easy work of their first three opponents with sweeps – Strake Jesuit sent home Dickinson, Atascocita and Shadow Creek – until it dropped the regional semifinal opener against Tompkins.
The Crusaders bounced back from the Game 1 loss with a 5-1 victory in Game 2, setting up the series-deciding game.
It was the second time Strake Jesuit advanced in the UIL playoffs, with 2016 being the last time the Crusaders achieved such a feat.
