Rep. Al Green (D-Houston) recently urged the United States Senate to pass legislation that would resolve a variety of policies and concerns regarding police conduct and transparency in law enforcement.

In a Twitter post, Green stressed the necessity of House Resolution 7120 (HR 7120), also known as the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, stating that unjustified police killings "cannot continue."

"What more do we need for the Senate to pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act? We have #GeorgeFloyd. We have #RonaldGreene," Green said in the tweet. "These 'incidents' cannot continue to occur."

The bill would reportedly reinforce law enforcement accountability, restrict the use of certain police techniques, increase transparency and data collection and establish better practices and training standards.

Additionally, Mayor Sylvester Turner and a coalition of black Houston business and civic leaders announced the establishment of the Houston Fund for Social Justice and Economic Equity on May 20. The nonprofit organization will focus on social and economic disparities, according to a press release.

"It is imperative that we address systemic problems in the black and brown community," Turner said. "Not just in this city, but in cities across the country."

Turner also stated that while Floyd's death affected the entire country, it had a much greater impact in Houston, Floyd's hometown.

The fund was announced just five days before the one-year anniversary of Floyd's death.

Floyd was killed by former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin on May 25, 2020.

Chauvin was recently convicted of Floyd's murder and is awaiting sentencing. The other officers involved in the incident are still awaiting trial.
