With Jake Martinez throwing a complete game and knocking a key two-out hit, League City Bay Area Christian took home the first TAPPS Division 3 Championship in school history, beating Lubbock Trinity Christian 3-1 at Waco ISD Stadium on May 14.
Martinez’s feats were rewarded with not only a state title but game MVP and TAPPS Final Four All-Tournament Team honors for the Texas Lutheran commit.
“Congrats to the 2021 State Champion Broncos who were selected to the TAPPS Final Four All-Tournament Team: Trent Rullman, Lane Escamilla, Jordan Medellin, & Jake Martinez,” the baseball team’s Twitter account posted the day after the game.
“Congrats to Jake Martinez who was selected as the TAPPS Division 3 Championship Game MVP!”
The Broncos overcame first-inning jitters to cap a 28-4-2 campaign in 2021.
In addition to Martinez’s pitching wizardry – seven innings pitched, one hit surrendered, zero earned runs, two walks and nine strikeouts – Escamilla powered the offense with two hits.
Adam Atwell, Ethan Mann, and Grayson Thallman chipped in hits for BAC, which ended a nearly 50-year title drought for the school’s boys’ teams.
The victory also made up for the Broncos’ loss in the 2015 title game.
