Congressman Wesley Hunt has introduced the National Educator Safety and Accountability Act of 2025, legislation aimed at addressing child safety in schools by creating new national standards for reporting educator misconduct.
According to Hunt, there is a significant threat facing children in the United States related to sexual misconduct or grooming by school employees. He cited statistics indicating that between 10% and 12% of children experience such behavior before graduating. Recent incidents in Texas have brought further attention to the issue, with media outlets such as the Texas Tribune and KPRC reporting on assaults against students.
A key concern highlighted by Hunt is the absence of an effective vetting system for school employees who are terminated for misconduct but then move to other districts. The lack of communication between state and local agencies can result in repeated incidents across the state.
The proposed legislation would establish a standardized national reporting system called the National Educator Misconduct and Discipline Registry. It also calls for the creation of a federal task force focused on educator sexual misconduct.
Hunt stated: "As leaders, it is our responsibility to ensure the safety of our children as they receive their education.
Under no circumstances should a school bypass a background check and vetting process during hiring.
We must guarantee that those who teach and aim to influence young minds are individuals with good intentions. We cannot allow groomers and sexual predators to access our children.
This legislation will provide an incentive for school districts to adopt measures that keep our children safe."
Wesley Hunt has served as the U.S. Representative for Texas's 38th District since 2023. He won his seat in 2024, defeating Melissa McDonough with 62.9% of the vote, following his earlier victory over Duncan Klussmann in 2022 with 63% of the vote. Born in Houston in 1981, Hunt continues to reside there.
