Congressman Troy E. Nehls (R-TX-22) announced that he will not seek re-election after his current term in Congress, choosing instead to focus on his family. In a statement released from Washington, D.C., Nehls reflected on his three decades in law enforcement and military service before serving six years as a representative.
"After more than 30 years in law enforcement serving and protecting my community as a police officer, constable, Fort Bend County Sheriff, an Army veteran, and six years representing this district in Congress, I have made the decision, after conversations with my beautiful bride and my girls over the Thanksgiving holiday, to focus on my family and return home after this Congress," Nehls said.
He also noted that he personally informed former President Donald Trump of his decision. "Before making this decision, I called President Trump personally to let him know of my plans. President Trump has always been a strong ally for our district and a true friend, and I wanted him to hear it from me first."
Nehls expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve at multiple levels. "Serving this country in the military, serving our community in law enforcement, and serving this district in Congress has been the honor of my life. Thank you for your trust, your friendship, and your prayers."
During his time in office representing Texas' 22nd Congressional District, Nehls won elections against several opponents: In 2020 he defeated Sri Preston Kulkarni with 51.5% of the vote; in 2022 he beat Jamie Jordan with 62.2%; and most recently in 2024 he won against Marquette Greene-Scott with 62.1%.
