Governor Greg Abbott has instructed the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) to ensure that local governments follow federal and state roadway safety guidelines. The directive aims to keep counties and cities in compliance with regulations that prohibit non-standard surface markings, signage, or signals on public roads if they do not directly relate to traffic control or safety.

"Texans expect their taxpayer dollars to be used wisely, not advance political agendas on Texas roadways," Governor Abbott said. "Today, I directed the Texas Department of Transportation to ensure Texas counties and cities remove any and all political ideologies from our streets. To keep Texans moving safely and free from distraction, we must maintain a safe and consistent transportation network across Texas. Any city that refuses to comply with the federal road standards will face consequences including the withholding or denial of state and federal road funding and suspension of agreements with TxDOT."

Federal and state guidelines specifically ban symbols, flags, or other markings on roads that convey social, political, or ideological messages if these are unrelated to safety or traffic management.
