Governor Greg Abbott has appointed Robert Eckels as the new Chair of the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission. Eckels will serve on the commission until November 15, 2027. The commission is responsible for supervising and regulating all aspects of the alcoholic beverage industry in Texas.

Eckels is an attorney of counsel at Husch Blackwell LLP and general counsel for Greffex, Inc. He previously served six terms in the Texas State Legislature before being elected County Judge of Harris County. His experience includes serving on advisory committees to President George W. Bush and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

He is a member of several bar associations, including those in Texas, New York, Colorado, and Washington D.C., and holds certification as a fraud examiner. Eckels has also been recognized as a board leadership fellow by the National Association of Corporate Directors.

His previous roles include chairing the Texas County and District Retirement System and serving as president of the Texas County Judges and Commissioners Association. He was also a board member with both the Texas Association of Counties and the National Association of Counties, where he chaired committees related to energy, environment, and land use.

Eckels participates in various organizations such as Rotary Club of Houston, K9s 4 Cops (where he serves as president), and the International Committee of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Technology from the University of Houston and earned his Juris Doctor from South Texas College of Law.
