Governor Greg Abbott has announced that more than $7.7 million in Funds for Veterans’ Assistance (FVA) grants have been awarded to 28 organizations serving the San Antonio and South-Central Texas region. The grants, administered by the Texas Veterans Commission (TVC), are expected to provide services to over 6,000 veterans and their families across 40 counties.

“Texas will always honor the sacrifices of veterans who courageously served our country,” said Governor Abbott. "These Fund for Veterans' Assistance grants will provide the brave men and women who served in our nation’s military access to crucial services to help them thrive in San Antonio and South-Central Texas. Our state will never forget our veterans, their families, and their service to our state and our nation."

"I want to sincerely thank each of our award recipients for serving our veterans,” said TVC Chairwoman and Navy veteran Laura Koerner. “Your organizations are recognized for making a difference in lives of those who served. The San Antonio area is home to many veterans including myself. It’s great to see our community giving back to those who served."

Chairwoman Koerner presented the grants at Meals on Wheels San Antonio. Recipients include local governments, nonprofits, and service providers offering transportation, housing support, peer counseling, financial assistance, clinical counseling, support services for homeless veterans, skill-based training, legal aid through Veterans Treatment Courts, and more.

Some notable awards include $250,000 for transportation services and $350,000 for Housing for Texas Heroes from the Alamo Area Council of Governments; $425,000 in financial assistance from Bexar County Commissioners Court; $500,000 for clinical counseling from West Texas Counseling & Guidance; as well as multiple awards supporting peer support services and emergency needs.

In May 2025, Governor Abbott announced a record allocation of $46.3 million distributed through over 200 grants benefiting nearly 40,000 veterans statewide. Since 2009—and including this current grant cycle—more than $359 million has been distributed via over 1,600 FVA grants across Texas.

The FVA program supports a range of needs such as emergency financial relief, transportation help, mental health care through specialized grants like Veterans Mental Health Grants or Veterans Treatment Courts programs—along with housing modifications or rental/mortgage assistance. Funding comes mainly from proceeds generated by designated Texas Lottery games that support veteran initiatives; residents can also contribute when registering vehicles or purchasing hunting/fishing licenses.
