Phase One of the Timmerman Power Plant in Maxwell is now commercially operational and connected to the Texas state grid, according to an announcement from Governor Greg Abbott and the Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA).

Governor Abbott emphasized the importance of expanding power resources for Texas as its population increases. “As our state grows, it is critical that we continue to add reliable, dispatchable power to the grid,” said Governor Abbott. “The Timmerman Power Plant coming online ensures more affordable power to serve the state for decades. Texas is America’s economic engine, and investments like the Timmerman Power Plant ensure we provide the electricity to support our growing state.”

LCRA Board Chair Stephen F. Cooper highlighted the project’s long-term benefits for Texas communities. "This project demonstrates LCRA's commitment to strategic infrastructure investments that will serve Texas communities for decades," Cooper said. "The board is proud to support initiatives that strengthen our state's energy security."

Phil Wilson, LCRA General Manager, noted how quickly the new facility can respond to demand. "LCRA is proud to bring the first unit of the Timmerman plant online to provide additional reliable power to our growing state," Wilson said. "We need more dispatchable power that can be up and running in minutes to provide power quickly and efficiently, and this plant helps meet that need."

Governor Abbott participated in a groundbreaking ceremony with LCRA officials in April 2024 for this project. The Timmerman Power Plant is notable as it marks the first project supported by the Texas Energy Fund to become operational.

Once fully completed, expected in 2026 with Phase Two, the plant will have a total capacity of 380 megawatts and create over 300 jobs in the San Marcos area.
