Governor Greg Abbott has declared a disaster for 191 Texas counties due to rising wildfire threats across the state. The declaration comes as warm temperatures, dry vegetation, and increased winds have heightened wildfire risks in several regions, according to the Texas A&M Forest Service.

The Governor has directed the Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) to mobilize state emergency response resources to assist local officials. "Our No. 1 priority is to protect the safety and well-being of Texans across the state," said Governor Abbott. "Today, I issued a disaster declaration to provide all necessary resources to communities who could be affected by wildfires. Texans are urged to regularly monitor wildfire conditions and heed the guidance of local officials and emergency management personnel to protect yourselves and your loved ones."

The Texas A&M Forest Service has raised its Wildland Fire Preparedness Level to Level 2, which means that elevated fire danger is present in some areas. Residents are encouraged to take steps such as avoiding activities that might cause sparks or flames, preparing an emergency plan, following instructions from authorities, and keeping emergency supplies ready.

In response to the increased risk, TDEM has activated multiple state resources. The Texas A&M Forest Service is deploying over 100 firefighters and support staff along with fire engines, bulldozers, motor graders, federally contracted firefighting aircraft—including single-engine air tankers for retardant drops—and an air attack platform for surveillance and spotting. The Texas National Guard is providing Chinook and Blackhawk helicopters equipped for firefighting operations.
