Governor Greg Abbott has directed the Texas Rangers to investigate Texas House Democrats who have been absent from legislative sessions. The investigation will focus on possible violations of state law, including bribery.
“Today, I ordered the Texas Rangers to immediately investigate fleeing Texas House Democrats for potential bribery and any other potential legal violations connected to their refusal to appear for a quorum, conduct business, and cast votes,” said Governor Abbott. “That investigation should extend to anyone who aided or abetted such potential crimes."
According to reports, several Democratic lawmakers may have asked for or received money while avoiding their legislative duties. Under the Texas Penal Code, accepting funds in exchange for missing votes or not fulfilling legislative responsibilities could be considered bribery. It is also possible that individuals who provided financial support to these lawmakers could face similar accusations.
The governor has instructed the Texas Rangers to finish their investigation quickly and send any findings to prosecutors.
